As teachers and students return to the classroom, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is offering a variety of free educational programs designed to enhance learning experiences and prepare students for future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“At FPL, we believe that investing in education is investing in our community’s future,” said Kate Cotner, FPL director of community engagement. “Through programs like classroom makeover grants, Captain Wattage energy shows and our Drones in School initiative, we’re empowering teachers and students with the tools they need to succeed.”

Here are some programs offered as the school year begins:

      •       $50,000 Classroom Makeover Grants transform learning environments

Teachers at 10 schools in FPL’s service area have the chance to receive $50,000 grants each this fall to transform their classrooms into 21st-century learning environments. The grants provide eligible public, private and charter schools across all grade levels the opportunity to update technology and resources while advancing curriculum and increasing STEM education exposure for their students.

      •       Captain Wattage brings energy education to students

Teachers at elementary schools in FPL’s service area can register for Captain Wattage, a free, action-packed show that captivates students’ imagination while delivering important energy conservation messages. Schools can sign up at www.FPL.com/Education for fall, spring and summer camp presentations.

      •       Drones in School program prepares students for aviation careers

With Florida’s significant demand for aviation professionals, the Drones in School program helps students enhance technical skills using small-scale drone technology in a safe, scalable environment. Teachers receive comprehensive training while FPL funds teams and sponsors competitions, giving students hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology. Schools interested in participating can contact the education team at Education@FPL.com.

      •       New Worlds Reading supports Early Literacy Development

FPL supports the free New Worlds Reading program, which provides enrolled students with monthly books and activities tailored to their interests from enrollment through fifth grade. This program helps parents support their children’s reading development at home while teachers reinforce literacy skills in the classroom. More information about student qualification and FPL’s literacy support is available at www.FPL.com/Education.

These highlights are just a few of the initiatives that FPL has to support teachers, engage parents and prepare students for successful futures in an evolving energy landscape. To learn more about each program and other programs FPL supports, visit www.FPL.com/Education.
