Francis X. Sexton Jr., 75, a Miami attorney, was honored at the annual Red Mass for members of the legal profession, celebrated Dec. 11, 2024, at Gesu Church in Downtown Miami.

At the mass, Sexton received the 2024 Lex Christi, Lex Amoris (Law of Christ, Law of Love) Award. On receiving this award, Sexton spoke of the time he was asked to be president of The Guild. As a self-proclaimed sceptic, especially about religion, Sexton thought the idea of becoming the president of the Miami Catholic Lawyers Guild didn’t make sense.

As he stated, “We are in an age of secularism, and law is a very worldly, mercenary business.”

On taking the helm six years ago, the Guild was not in a good shape but something pushed him.

“To not to let something so precious and valuable to lawyers die,” he said.

Sexton speaks of the Guild as a place for lawyers to go where it’s okay for tough individuals to talk about faith, their beliefs and struggles, and to call one another brothers and sisters.

Sexton told the legal professionals at the mass, including several judges wearing their black robes, that his years as president of the Guild had been both excruciating because he worried a lot about it, and wonderful because it changed him and made him a better man.

He was humbled by the recognition from his colleagues whose past recipients include district and state court judges and giant figures of the Bar who he has come to know and who he looks up to, not because of their robes but because of their faith.
