Miami-Dade County’s libraries always have been a gateway to knowledge, entertainment, a world of ideas and other cultures. Now a simple library card also can get families into great area attractions…for free.
Victoria Galan, public affairs officer for the Miami-Dade Public Library System, explained how the system works for Miami-Dade residents.
“We’ve partnered with seven of the country’s premiere attractions — Zoo Miami, History Miami, Miami Art Museum, Miami Children’s Museum, Fairchild Tropical Garden, Miami Science Museum and the Deering Estate,” Galan said. “Every branch has passes that they can check out to their patrons. A patron can check out one pass a week for a family of four and experience that location for free. It’s an amazing opportunity.”
People can go to their local branch and see what is available and check out a pass to use on Saturday or Sunday or any free day they have.
“We all serve the same audience, but we found that people aren’t going because of the ticket prices in these trying times,” Galan said. “Our partners have been so generous to donate these passes so people can become aware of these facilities. The idea is to grow future museum lovers and to bring together the library and these attractions to help that happen.
“We launched it in March and we’ve had 2,400 passes checked out since then. Imagine four tickets to the zoo, just because of your library card.”
How does the pass work? The pass is good for up to a family of four, for one visit. It is not renewable or available for reserve. The pass is valid for seven days from the time of check out and will not be replaced if lost or stolen. Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Only one pass may be checked out at a time. Note: museums may apply restrictions including blackout dates or separate admission to special events or exhibits.
