Gordon Center honors Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Forces with new helmets
The Gordon Center honored members of Florida’s Urban Search & Rescue Task Force-1 and Task Force-2 with 80 new helmets (some seen above).

In a heartfelt ceremony celebrating the resilience and dedication of local first responders, the Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education at the University of Miami presented 80 new helmets to the heroes of the Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Force-1 and Task Force-2.

These brave men and women trained at the Gordon Center and have been pivotal in emergency response efforts for events such as the Surfside Champlain building collapse; the recent fires on Maui, HI; Hurricane Ian, and many more challenging situations.

The event provided attendees and the general public with a unique window into the rigorous training provided by the Gordon Center. The center’s world-class training prepares these elite teams for prompt, efficient, and effective interventions during pivotal emergency situations.

Dr. Ivette Motola, MD, MPH, director of the Prehospital and Emergency Training Division at the Gordon Center, was in attendance alongside Angel (Al) Brotons, director of Training Operations at the Gordon Center and a seasoned paramedic/firefighter.

Distinguished guests included Fire Chief Raied “Ray” Jadallah of the Miami Dade County Fire Rescue Department, Special Operations Chief Chris Diaz of the City of Miami Fire Rescue, FLTF1 Chief Brandon Webb, and Chief JD Patterson, the Interim Chief of Public Safety for Miami-Dade County.

With recent disasters still fresh in the public consciousness, the vital role of well-trained first responders has never been more important. The Gordon Center, under its train-the-trainer model, has been instrumental in developing the skills and techniques that Urban Search and Rescue Teams use when lives are on the line.

The ceremony not only celebrated the tireless efforts of these teams but highlighted the state-of-the-art training first responders receive at the Gordon Center, founded by the late Dr. Michael S. Gordon. With a legacy spanning over 45 years, the center continues to set a global standard for medical and rescue training.

The Gordon Center’s unique features, including cutting-edge human patient simulators, rescue vehicle, immersive trauma and disaster training areas and a mock emergency department, set the stage for intense, realistic training that mirrors the conditions and challenges first responders face in real-world disasters.

The center collaborates extensively with state and community colleges that train paramedics and firefighters. Additionally, it partners with the U.S. Army Trauma Training Detachment, together with the UHealth/Jackson Ryder Trauma Center to train civilian and military trauma teams.
