FPL has supported marine science education training for 100+ teachers in 2025, coinciding with the company’s 100th anniversary
Since 2021, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), through a gift by the NextEra Energy Foundation, a corporate foundation of NextEra Energy Inc. and Florida Power & Light Company, has collaborated with the Guy Harvey Foundation (GHF) to expand environmental education opportunities for teachers and students and provide families with resources to learn about the state’s environment and wildlife and how to preserve and protect both for future generations.
As one of GHF’s first partners, FPL’s generous funding and support has helped launch the Foundation’s marine science education and ocean conservation program in Florida schools. This year, in celebration of FPL’s 100th anniversary, GHF received more than $60,000 from FPL to train 100 teachers through Conservation Education Training sessions held at locations across Florida. This funding also enabled participating educators to apply for grants that help offset travel expenses, stipends, substitute teacher costs, and other related needs to attend the trainings.
Each trained teacher received a co-branded Guy Harvey Foundation and FPL “treasure chest” filled with classroom supplies. In addition, FPL funded ten field trip grants, giving teachers the opportunity to take their students out into the natural world to apply what they learned.
“We are so incredibly grateful for the generosity and support from FPL, one of Florida’s most prominent and largest companies,” said Jessica Harvey, CEO of the Guy Harvey Foundation. “Thanks to companies like FPL, we can continue providing educational programming that empowers educators and inspires the next generation of marine conservationists, ensuring that future generations can enjoy and benefit from a properly balanced ocean ecosystem.”
The Guy Harvey Conservation Education program is open to all elementary, middle and high school educators and includes all the materials, classroom supplies and educational content they need to inspire, excite and encourage the next generation of ocean conservationists. Through this immersive, experiential program, educators, and by extension schools and school districts, can participate in regional professional development opportunities dedicated to environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education. Following their training in the program, participants become Guy Harvey Conservation Educators who are then empowered with knowledge and resources they can share with students to foster environmental awareness and contribute to a sustainable future. The program also offers grants for field trips and supplies enabling Guy Harvey Conservation Educators to further enhance their teaching and instill conservation values in students.
“We’re proud to partner with the Guy Harvey Foundation to support educators who inspire the next generation of environmental stewards and STEM leaders,” said Juliet Roulhac senior director of external affairs for the Broward & Southwest regions for Florida Power & Light Company and the director of corporate philanthropy for NextEra Energy, Inc. “Teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds and fostering curiosity about our natural world. By investing in their classrooms and providing resources that bring marine science and conservation to life, we’re empowering students to explore careers in STEM while deepening their understanding of Florida’s unique ecosystems. Together, we’re helping to build a future where students are equipped with the knowledge and passion to drive innovation in their communities.”
