As a Miami resident, I’m always on the lookout for the perfect weekend getaway. Hawks Cay Resort, located just 90 miles from Miami on Duck Key, turned out to be exactly what I was looking for—just far enough to feel like a true escape, but not too far to require hours of travel. From the moment I peeled off Route 1 and cruised up Hawks Cay Boulevard, I knew this would be an unforgettable stay. The resort’s stunning AAA Four-Diamond hotel, nestled in its own secluded haven, set the stage for three days of paradise.

Hawks Cay Resort is an ideal destination for couples, families, and groups seeking that quintessential Florida Keys experience. Whether you want to explore the crystal-clear waters, indulge in a spa treatment, or simply unwind by the pool, this place has it all.

Decisions, Decisions

Checking in was a breeze, and the staff greeted us with the warmth and hospitality that really set Hawks Cay apart. In fact, I don’t believe I’ve ever been treated so well – not just in the Keys, but anywhere! As I walked into my Hawks Cay Guest Room, I was impressed by the elegant interior: 376 square feet of stylish space, complete with a private furnished balcony offering views of the lush resort grounds. However, as I glanced around the property, I couldn’t help but consider the upgrade to one of their Penthouse Suites.

The two-bedroom suites, like the Stargazer Suite with its modern décor and in-suite telescope, or the Coastal Suite with its relaxed, coastal-casual design, were calling my name. Each suite offered 1,400 square feet of living space and an impressive 3,200-square-foot private rooftop terrace. It was tempting, but I stuck with my room, appreciating the comfort and elegance it provided.

For families or larger groups, the 200 two-, three-, and four-bedroom Hawks Cay Villas are the perfect choice. Equipped with full kitchens, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and oversized decks with water views, these villas provide a home-away-from-home experience.

Getting to Know You

Hawks Cay Resort isn’t just about the accommodations—its 60 acres of lush property are brimming with amenities. The resort boasts five restaurants, five swimming pools, a saltwater lagoon, and a full-service spa. There’s something for everyone, from onsite watersports and fishing charters to a Dolphin Connection facility where guests can interact with dolphins in their natural environment.

Our first stop was dinner, and with so many dining options available, it was hard to choose. Among the highlights was Salt + Ash, the resort’s newest culinary concept helmed by Top Chef Winner Jeremy Ford, offering elevated farm-to-table and fresh-from-the-sea American cuisine, and Angler & Ale, a casual spot overlooking the marina. The variety was fantastic, with everything from quick bites at the Tiki Grill to island-inspired dishes at Oasis Cay, an adults-only dining area with stunning ocean views.

Watersports Win the Day

Although I originally intended to relax poolside, the allure of the resort’s beautiful waters was irresistible. The full-service marina offered everything from snorkeling and boating to eco-adventures on both the ocean and bay sides. By the third day, I reluctantly accepted that I could never leave without experiencing everything, so I took the opportunity to enjoy a poolside rest day.

The Dolphin Connection was a major highlight. The resort offers so many activities, I’ll have to return for more—perhaps to tackle tennis, pickleball, and even book a fishing excursion.

For the Kids

Hawks Cay is not just for adults—it’s a fantastic destination for families. Named the #1 Family Resort by USA Today 10Best, the resort offers a treasure trove of activities for kids. The Coral Cay area features a pirate ship pool complete with slides, tunnels, and water cannons. It’s a dream come true for younger guests. The resort also offers a soccer field, basketball courts, putting greens, and special events designed to keep kids entertained throughout their stay.

Conclusion

Hawks Cay Resort provided the perfect escape, blending relaxation with adventure in a way that makes it a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a getaway in the Florida Keys. I can’t wait to return and experience even more of what Hawks Cay has to offer.
