The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church of Miami Inc., the first Black church on the South Florida mainland organized by Blacks, has announced the celebration of its 130th Anniversary in 2025.
Founded in 1895 under the leadership of Bahamian pioneer the late Rev. Samuel A. Sampson and 56 faithful servants, Macedonia has stood as a beacon of faith, hope, and community service in historic Coconut Grove for more than a century. The church’s deep roots are intertwined with Miami’s growth and the perseverance of African American communities in South Florida.
A legacy of leadership and service
Macedonia has been guided by visionary pastors who expanded its mission through worship, education, civic leadership, and community advocacy. From Rev. Sampson’s founding vision to Rev. Dr. J.A.F. Finlayson’s 31-year leadership and national influence, to Rev. Rudolph Daniels’ 34 years of faithful service, and now under the dynamic leadership of Rev. Lance B. Bailey Sr., the church continues to grow spiritually and serve as a pillar in Miami-Dade County.
Upcoming 130th anniversary events
Saturday, Oct. 11 – 130th Anniversary Brunch Celebration ($50.00). A special gathering at Christ Episcopal Church Gibson Hall with members, families, and community partners to celebrate Macedonia’s 130-year legacy of faith and service.
Sunday, Oct. 26 – 11 a.m. Anniversary Closeout Service featuring guest preacher Rev. Dr. Walter T. Richardson, beloved Miami faith leader, author, and community servant.
Commitment to the future
As it celebrates 130 years, Macedonia remains committed to its mission of Christian service and community empowerment. Current initiatives under Rev. Bailey’s leadership include youth ministries, after-school enrichment, scholarship programs, food distribution, and civic engagement efforts.
“Our church’s roots are like those of a redwood tree – deep, strong, and intertwined with the history of our community. We celebrate 130 years not just looking back, but looking forward to what God will continue to do through Macedonia,” said Rev. Lance B. Bailey Sr.
