HistoryMiami Museum Ferries Visitors to a Fantastical Land for the Holidays with its Exhibit, “Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids.”

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The human imagination is both wonderful and terrible in its ability to create. Both unicorns and dragons are born from people’s natural tendency to wonder about the mystical and mysterious. These creations are not endemic to one people or another, but rather across the globe, various tales and myths become some of the most important cultural keystones for the people that recount them. But where do such stories come from? At HistoryMiami Museum, their fantastical exhibit “Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids” seeks to explore just that.

The exhibit makes its way to Miami after traveling around the world, showcasing creatures such as the Chupacabra which has found its way into many of the folktales told here in Miami. Director of Exhibitions at HistoryMiami Museum, Chris Barfield curated a special portion of the exhibit called Mythic Miami in which he uncovers the secrets behind the Chupacabra, the Caribbean Mermaid, and the Skunk Ape. Audio recordings from alleged witnesses, investigators, and even Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill tell the stories of these creatures of legend here in Miami.

This holiday season, give your family a chance to explore the strange and mystical mysteries of mythologies from China to the Alaskan Inuits to the Greeks. Uncover the magic of sea beasts and giants that roamed the imagination of ancient societies in a world-class exhibit organized by the American Museum of Natural History that will run until March 31st.
