HistoryMiami Museum offers free entry for kids, families all summer

HistoryMiami Museum, 101 W. Flagler St., continues its Summer Passport Program that provides free access to the museum for all children in Miami-Dade County. The program, which is available through Aug. 19, offers children an exciting educational adventure while exploring South Florida’s rich past.

The passports can be picked up at the museum’s front desk, which is located at 101 W. Flagler St. in Downtown Miami. Each passport offers free admission to each child and their family members (up to four people per passport). After every museum visit, the child will receive a stamp in one of the passport’s four boxes. Once all four boxes are stamped, the child will be allowed to pick an exciting prize from a specially curated treasure box.

“We are looking forward to opening our doors to students and their families this summer with our Summer Passport Program,” said Jorge Zamanillo, executive director of HistoryMiami Museum. “HistoryMiami’s core mission is to share Miami’s unique stories. By taking cost away and making entrance to the museum free, we’re making South Florida’s great history accessible to all.”

Throughout the summer, kids and their families can not only experience the history of Miami through the museum’s core exhibitions, but can also enjoy two other special exhibitions. The first is Miami Rocks: The Miami Pop Festival, May 1968, which pays tribute to the original Miami Pop Festival held 50 years ago in Gulfstream Park, where musicians like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Chuck Berry and Frank Zappa performed.

The second exhibition, titled Avenues of Expression: Street Traditions in Miami, allows visitors to discover the street traditions that are hiding in plain sight on Miami’s avenues, highlighting traditions such as street art, protests, vehicle customizing, food vendors, ventanitas, religious practices, and much more.

“Whether you enjoy the history of Miami’s music scene or learning about the stories that make Miami, Miami, we have something for everyone at HistoryMiami. We can’t wait to see everyone at the museum this summer,” Zamanillo said.

HistoryMiami Museum is supported by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museum, HistoryMiami is also sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
