Honey Shine’s “Hats Off Luncheon,” combined with its membership and appeal, helped raise $250,000 for the Honey Shine Mentoring Program in which more than 180 girls currently are enrolled.
For the past 10 years, this program, founded by Tracy Wilson Mourning, wife of NBA champion Alonzo Mourning, has mentored hundreds of girls in the community, 15 of whom have successfully graduated high school and continued on to higher education with funds raised through the annual “Hats Off” affair.
During this year’s event, several notable individuals were recognized including Alonzo Mourning; Honey Shine members and event co-chairs Cathy Blank and Monisha Melwani; Steering Committee Member of the Year Ayana Rodriguez; Honey Bug of the Year Jasmine Thompson, and two outstanding role models, Tahiese Beckford and Jonaura Wisdom, who shared the honor of Mentor of the Year Award.

Yet another “Hats Off” Luncheon was held at the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs Spring Convention where representatives from several South Florida clubs picked up strategies for the coming year and walked home with countless awards.
For their considerable outreach and community service, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club alone brought home eight first place, six second place and three third place awards. Congratulations to all the district clubs who work hard to make a positive impact on our community. Among the many local club members attending the convention were Coral Gables Club’s outgoing president Linda Hartwell and president- elect Mireya Kilmon.
As summer approaches, the Miami Science Museum is gearing up for its 46th annual Summer Camp, with eight one-week camp sessions beginning June 28 through Aug. 10, for kids ages 4-14. This is a camp that makes learning fun and will feature science lessons, projects, experiments, and crafts, interspersed with time to explore the museum galleries, planetarium or theater shows, and a 30-minute outdoor PE time.

The Global Medical Brigade’s mission to Ghana held a fundraiser on May 10 at the Westin Colonnade featuring a food tasting provided by some of the Gables top restaurants including Morton’s, Fleming’s, Crave, Anacapri and Season’s 52.
With a threat of rain, the scheduled poolside terrace event was moved to Westin’s beautiful Rotunda Ballroom where guests enjoyed mingling and bidding on the silent auction.
Tabatha Erwin and her mother, Season’s 52’s Denise Erwin called on lots of friends in the hospitality industry to help make the affair a success. Among the crowd were High Heels and Hand Shakes’ Christina Ward, now with Crave; Coral Gables BID executive director Mari Gallet and husband, Phillip; the Westin’s chef Thomas Russo and Jennifer McDonough; Fleming’s Juan Carlos Marchand; Robin Orell; Stan Beran; Wally A renas; Vanesa Selva; Tim Lang; Bonnie Kilpatrick; Arlyene Ponce, and Betty Alvarez.
