The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and City Theatre will present the world premiere of How To Break In A Glove, a new family dramedy by Miami-based playwright Chris Anthony Ferrer.

Set in 1999 Hialeah, the play centers on a Cuban-American family navigating love, conflict, and connection inside a multi-generational household. Featuring an all-local cast, this world premiere production plays in the intimate Carnival Studio Theatre at the Arsht from Feb. 6 to 22.

How To Break In A Glove is the first full-length work to be developed as part of City Theatre’s Homegrown playwright development program, which is designed to give local writers the time, tools, and guidance to create new work.

Tickets to How To Break In A Glove are $67-$73 and may be purchased now at ArshtCenter.org or at the Arsht box office by calling 305-949-6722.

The public is invited to attend a nostalgic, Miami-themed opening night celebration beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Thomson Plaza for the Arts, featuring music from the ’90s, a selection of Cuban foods, and a photo moment before the show.

For guests with accessibility needs, the Arsht provides accessible seating and complimentary assistive listening devices for all performances, along with sign language interpretation, open captioning, and audio description at select shows to ensure an inclusive experience for all guests.

“I’m incredibly proud that City Theatre is premiering this exceptional new play by Miami playwright Chris Anthony Ferrer, developed through our Homegrown program,” said Margaret M. Ledford, artistic director of City Theatre. “It’s a powerful affirmation of our commitment to nurturing local artists and local stories. How to Break in a Glove is unmistakably Miami, and audiences who love this city will see themselves reflected onstage.”

In 1999 Miami, an 11-year-old boy clings to the fractured pieces of his Cuban-American family: an iron-willed grandfather, a devoted but weary grandmother, a father fighting for relevance and a mother torn between rebellion and responsibility.

When a night of crisis unearths buried tensions, love and survival collide in a battle for connection, legacy and the desperate need to belong. As with a new baseball glove, they must break in their bonds, stretching, softening and learning to hold on before it’s too late.

How To Break In A Glove features an all-Hispanic cast from Miami including Barbara Bonilla, Andy Quiroga, Randy Garcia, Kaelyn A. Gonzalez and Franco Kiglies.
