Weekend event launches with offshore trick-or-treating among 75 decorated boats in Coconut Grove Sailing Club’s “Haunted Mooring Field”
Each October, Coconut Grove Sailing Club transforms into a place where competition, costumes, and community spirit collide. The club’s annual Halloween “Howler Regatta,” Oct. 25-26, returns this year for its 16th edition, bringing together hundreds of young sailors and families for a weekend of racing by day and trick-or-treating on the water by night.
What started as a modest youth fundraiser in 2009 has grown into one of the club’s most cherished traditions. “That first year we had maybe 50 or 60 kids,” recalls club leaders. “Last year, more than 300 young sailors participated.” For Coconut Grove Sailing Club (CGSC), the event marked its very first youth regatta hosted at the club, a milestone that has since become a centerpiece of the sailing calendar.
Racing with A Howl
The two-day youth-sailing event welcomes members and pre-registered Regatta participants, ages 6-18. Competitors race in fleets such as the Optimist and the International Laser Class Association (ILCA, formerly known as Laser). Registration closes Wednesday, Oct. 22.
These aren’t casual laps around the bay. The regatta attracts participants from across Florida and beyond, with sailors from places like Chicago joining in. It’s one of two annual youth regattas hosted by CGSC, alongside Miami Sailing Week, and it has steadily earned a reputation for its scale and spirit.
The name “Howler” isn’t just a nod to Halloween. It’s also a wink to the notoriously blustery weather that seems to accompany the event each year. “No matter what, there’s always been a point where the wind picks up and we have to pause racing,” organizers laugh. “It’s become part of the tradition. The Howler always lives up to its name.”
Haunted Mooring Field
If the daytime races build competitive grit, the evening festivities deliver pure fun. The club’s now-famous Haunted Mooring Field began a couple of years after the first regatta and quickly became a highlight.
As the sun sets on Saturday, Oct. 25, CGSC staff ferry kids wearing lifejackets out in safety boats. Their mission? Trick-or-treating across a floating neighborhood of decorated sailboats anchored in Biscayne Bay. Each year, about 25 member boats dress up in spooky lights and Halloween themes, turning the mooring field into a glowing playground on the water.
“Think of it like a neighborhood with 25 houses, except those houses are boats,” explains one organizer. “The kids get candy at each stop, and in about 15 minutes they’re back on shore grinning ear to ear.” With six safety boats running rotations, dozens of groups cycle through the experience.
Parents and friends watch from land, where the club sets up games, snacks, and a festive atmosphere. It’s an only-in-the-Grove spectacle that blends sailing culture with the timeless joy of Halloween.
Balancing Safety And Spirit
Behind the playful haunted theme, safety is carefully managed. CGSC staff (not volunteers) drive the transport boats, and every child wears a lifejacket. Trick-or-treating is reserved for regatta participants and their invited friends to keep the event manageable after past years saw overwhelming demand.
That balance allows the club to maintain its core mission: creating a safe, fun space where kids can experience sailing, make friends, and connect with the wider community. The regatta isn’t just about racing; it’s about belonging.
More Than A Regatta
For CGSC, the Howler represents more than a youth sailing competition. It’s a demonstration of how the club functions as an anchor for the Coconut Grove community. By hosting accessible, family-friendly traditions, the club draws in young sailors who might never have stepped aboard a boat otherwise.
“It’s not only about racing,” says Lauren Simpson, a longtime leader with the club. “It’s about creating a tradition kids look forward to, something that blends fun, family, and the sport we love. That’s how you build community.”
This year, the Howler Regatta once again promises full fleets, creative costumes, and maybe a weather delay or two, but that’s all part of the charm. For Coconut Grove, it’s a seasonal celebration unlike any other, where a haunted mooring field and the thrill of the race come together to keep a beloved tradition alive and howling.
The 16th annual Howler Regatta continues CGSC’s tradition of blending competitive sailing with the unique spirit of Coconut Grove, creating an experience found nowhere else in South Florida. To register for the Regatta, visit https://cgscic.org/hh/.
