Palmetto Bay resident Ronnie Hurwitz has been taking care of veterans’ graves in Miami City Cemetery for the past 25 years. These are gravesites of those who died in service to the country.
During a visit, Hurwitz saw the graves were tended but needed TLC. He thought what better way to honor those who gave their all than to show respect for their final burial places. He has cleaned markers, reset them when they began to sink, weeded and planted roses, shrubs and decorated them for holidays, at his own expense.
He began research on the soldiers so they would not be forgotten. He has documented the lives of many of them. Hurwitz goes to the cemetery several times a month.
In appreciation of his efforts, he was presented a plaque during the Dade Heritage Trust Annual Awards Ceremony. The presentation was made by Penny Lambeth, chair of the Cemetery Restoration Committee and member of the Dade Heritage Trust Advisory Board.
