While the work of the Criminal Department isn’t flashy or glamorous, it is essential. These cases are complex, emotionally taxing, and often unfold over long periods of time. The clerks working in this department face the weight of human tragedy, legal urgency, and procedural precision every day. Their work may go unseen by most, but it is the backbone of the criminal justice system—ensuring that due process is upheld not only for the accused, but also for the victims, their families, and the community at large. Their commitment to accuracy, impartiality, and service helps make justice possible—and that is nothing short of heroic.
The Criminal Department of the Miami-Dade Clerk of the Court and Comptroller’s Office is responsible for managing all felony-level cases within the Eleventh Judicial Circuit—the fourth largest circuit in the country. From arrest to appeals, this department ensures each case is handled efficiently, transparently, and in compliance with Florida law.
The department is made up of nine specialized units, each playing a unique and vital role in the justice process:
- Centralized Bond Unit
- Pre-Hearing Unit
- Calendar Unit
- Court Teams
- Evidence Vault
- File Maintenance Unit
- Information Unit
- Post-Hearing Unit
- Appeals Unit
I want to personally thank the incredible team of the Criminal Department. It’s their dedication, resilience, and attention to detail are what keeps our justice system functioning every single day. They are not just recordkeepers—they are protectors of due process and defenders of fairness for all. I am proud to work alongside them and deeply grateful for the vital role they play in serving the residents of Miami-Dade County.
