Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services, Miami’s only 24-hour temporary emergency shelter for youth, hosted special guest Isaac Wright Jr., 2021 New York City mayoral candidate and the real-life inspiration behind ABC’s new legal drama, For Life, for an empowering conversation about overcoming immeasurable challenges and his relationship with injustice.
Once in prison for life, this now New Jersey-based litigator served seven years in prison for a false conviction, studying law behind bars before working as a proxy-lawyer for fellow inmates and eventually overturning his own case, proving his innocence in court and shining a light on corruption in the criminal justice system.
“As we observe Black History Month, I applaud the efforts of this modern-day warrior who fought for his freedom and the rights of others who have served time for crimes they did not commit,” stated Dr. Dorcas Wilcox, CEO of Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services.
During his visit, Wright received a tour of Miami Bridge’s Miami Central Campus, met and greeted the staff, and spoke with the youth about personal hardships and understanding where the root of change occurs in a community.
The community utilizes Miami Bridge as the axis point of all Miami-Dade County efforts in dealing with kids in crisis who are runaways, truant, homeless, or having issues at home.
In Miami-Dade County, it is the only emergency home serving kids, ages 10-17. The Bridge also provides free community outreach services to help Miami-Dade families stay together through short-term family crisis intervention programs.
