As you read this, a major showdown is on the immediate horizon which has been brewing for quite some time. This battle for the soul of a nation, between two people of different backgrounds, with contrasting philosophies and divergent views about what’s best, is about to affect us in Miami. Such a confrontation inevitably leads to disagreement, with individuals of dissimilar social, ethnic, racial, gender, and sexual orientation all harboring views that are emotional and personal. Sometimes, this can feel hopeless, with families on the verge of breaking apart. That said, I hope that your Thanksgiving will not be ruined by people who cannot agree about whether or not returning champion Golden Rule’s Chef Generric Kyles’ shrimp was actually tastier than new challenger Chef Marko Palazon, but this is where we are in 2024.
On Friday, Oct. 25, this year’s VIP Chef Showdown will take place at Lummus Park on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach from 7:00 – 11:00 PM. 22 restaurant battle sampling stations will offer their latest creations after which you can exercise your freedom to VOTE for your favorite chef. Ideally, the competition will not be rigged, that the votes will be tallied fairly, that there will be a peaceful transfer of cocktail sauce if any previous winner is dethroned, and that lawsuits concerning the outcomes will not be settled by the sous chef of the second place finisher. Guests can head over to the Jack Daniel’s LIVE STAGE, presented by GOYA Foods, to cheer on their favorite South Florida Chef as they battle LIVE on stage with a panel of executive judges weighing in and MC’d by Food Network celebrity, Chef Robert Irvine. These rallies are expected to deal with crowd sizes that are exuberant but needing no Secret Service. Another long running Miami ritual is the Miami Film Festival GEMS. Opening night’s The Room Next Door starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, is legendary Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film. Among other centerpieces in GEMS is The Brutalist, Winner of the Silver Lion Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival, a historical drama and masterwork from director Brady Corbet starring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones fleeing post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their lives. Early award talk is all about Brody. The closing night film is A Real Pain, written, directed, and produced by Jesse Eisenberg. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2024,and at the 62nd New York Film Festival on October 6. In it, a pair of cousins, Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin visit Poland in honor of their late grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, in an American-style buddy road trip movie with serious, comic overtones.
