The Foundation to Award Over $1.5 Million to Cultural Organizations Around Miami-Dade County to Support and Enhance South Florida’s Artistic Ecosystem

The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation is pleased to announce the second edition of The Pérez CreARTE Grants Program (CreARTE). First established in 2019, the program is dedicated to identifying and supporting exemplary cultural organizations that seek to cultivate a vibrant, connected and culturally stimulating ecosystem in Greater Miami. The CreARTE initiative will disperse upwards of $1.5 million across three focus areas: Arts Access, Arts Education and Artists Fellowships and Residencies. Applications open on Monday, April 26, with finalists announced late fall. Eligible organizations may apply here.

CreARTE is carried out through a unique partnership, combining The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation’s passion and funding with The Miami Foundation’s expertise of the nonprofit community and its experience in grantmaking.

“Art is a powerful tool—it is often the lens through which we communicate emotions or ideas, and it further informs our city’s development, both economically and culturally,” said Jorge M. Pérez, founder of the Pérez Family Foundation and nationally recognized philanthropist. “Our hope for CreARTE is to continue working with grantees to fuel lifelong interest in, and appreciation for, the arts, help them build audiences for the future, and, together, solidify South Florida as a world-class cultural destination.”

This year’s CreARTE grants will focus on empowering local non-profit organizations to embrace artistic risk-taking, expand the diversity of creative experiences on offer and present work that inspires the community. Grants will range up to $250,000 for two years, and will support programmatic, capital, or operational opportunities.

After a memorable inaugural program in 2019, the second edition of CreARTE will seek to fill key areas that impact the creative community most, including access to affordable workspaces, cultural equity, and education. More information on the three focus areas can be found below:

  • Arts Access: Funding to support meaningful and diverse public engagement with, and access to, various forms of high-quality art across Greater Miami and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.
  • Arts Education: Funding to support high-performing, innovative organizations in Greater Miami working to ensure that all young people have equitable access to arts education opportunities. This area aims to invest in the most effective, scalable, multidisciplinary arts education programs, in school and out of school, as well as pre-professional training programs that prepare future artists in a variety of disciplines.
  • Artist Fellowships and Residencies: Funding to support the creation and/or expansion of artist fellowship and residency programs to expand local options for artistic professionals to hone their talents and showcase their work. The programs should recognize and cultivate artists, local and national, in pivotal phases of their careers, celebrate outstanding achievements and support their artistic development.

In 2019, CreARTE received over 200 applications, and ultimately invested over $2 million in 23 Miami-Dade-based organizations. Winners included the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, which used their $200,000 grant to support and expand their free Learning Through the Arts education programs; Moonlighter Makerspace, which used their $100,000 grant to pivot their mission and fabricate masks for frontline healthcare workers exposed to COVID-19; and Guitars Over Guns, which used their $100,000 grant to fund their after-school arts education programs, ultimately investing in the creative development of underserved local youth. The full list of 2019 CreARTE grant recipients can be found here.

“Miami is a hub for artistic excellence, and CreARTE brings fuel exactly where it is needed most,” said Rebecca Fishman Lipsey, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “We are proud to house CreARTE and work hand in hand with the Pérez Family Foundation to amplify their tremendous philanthropy and increase equity and opportunity through the arts.”
