Jr. OB parade celebrates a 'Holiday on the Mile'

Every holiday season for 68 years the Junior Orange Bowl Parade has celebrated youth, community, and culture with floats, marching bands, equestrian groups, vintage cars, and much more.

The “Holiday on the Mile” Parade on Nov. 27, hosted and sponsored by the City of Coral Gables, featured more than 60 units including Double Olympic Medalist Danell Leyva serving as grand marshal, Billy the Marlin with the Miami Marlins Energy Team, Ron Magill with the Zoo Miami mascots, and beautifully decorated floats and vehicles by FPL, South Florida Miata Club, Homestead Rodeo Association, Pleasantville Fire Department, South Florida Council Boy Scouts, Mahi Shriners, and Florida Fun Train. The parade also featured a float and the game experience RV from the Capital One Orange Bowl.

This year’s parade also included prizes for the top two marching bands. The winners were Miami Northwestern’s Mighty Marching Bulls and Miami High’s Million Dollar Band.

Grandstand ticket holders also enjoyed the pre-parade show, presented by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, featuring The Actors’ Playhouse cast performing hits from Million Dollar Quartet.

Honoring a longstanding tradition, the parade also featured the 2016-17 Junior Orange Bowl Royal Court’s Queen Gwendolyn Odin, Princess Celine Alvarez, Princess Bianca Delgado, and Little Sister Jasmine Willis, who delighted the crowd as they rode by on their majestic float with mascot Jobie.

The Junior Orange Bowl sponsors includeda: Festival Sponsor Miami-Dade County, Slesnick & Jochem Real Estate, FPL, Harry & Mary Perrin Fund, Walmart, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, Gunster Law Firm, EWM International Realty, Greenberg Traurig, Ojala Wine, Miami’s Community Newspapers, Miami Herald, Publix, Coral Gables Business Improvement District and Walgreens.

The annual parade is the flagship event of the Junior Orange Bowl Festival season, which consists of 15 athletic, academic, and cultural youth events that are all held in South Florida. Some Junior Orange Bowl highlights for the 2016-17 season are the International Tennis Championship, International Golf Championship, and Basketball Classic, all of which are taking place during the month of December. The third annual Gala will take place on Saturday, Mar. 18, 2017, at the new EAST Miami hotel.
