The Kiwanis Club of Miami recently awarded $135,000 to 13 different community youth recreational groups in a ceremony at the Boys’ & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Hank Kline Unit, 2805 SW 32 Ave.

Founded in 1921 and serving the community for 98 years, The Kiwanis Club of Miami is Florida’s oldest Kiwanis Club. Now based in the Kendall area, the club was originally the Downtown Miami Kiwanis Club. The late Paul Zee, a South Florida contractor and longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of Miami, left money in his will to fund the Miami Kiwanis Youth Foundation to benefit youth recreation in Miami-Dade County.

With the recent ceremony, the Kiwanis Club of Miami — through the Miami Kiwanis Youth Foundation — has distributed nearly $1.66 million since the year 2000. This year marks the seventh time that the club has topped $100,000 in annual grants. This is the largest single year distribution in the history of the Kiwanis Club of Miami grants.

Groups receiving grants included: Boys’ & Girls’ Club of Miami, Chapman Partnership, Children’s Resource Fund, Cutler Ridge Soccer, Good Hope Equestrian Center, Junior Orange Bowl, Little Havana Kiwanis Foundation, Optimist Club of Greater Goulds, PATCHES PPEC, Peace Education Foundation, Richmond Perrine Optimist Club, WOW Center, and YMCA of South Florida.
