Leading Arts and Health Advocate Carla Hill to Speak at 18th Annual Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness Event

Carla Hill

Television personality Carla Hill, a local advocate for the arts and health, will serve as guest keynote speaker at this year’s Day of Caring for Breast Cancer Awareness event.  She was recognized by the Miami-Dade County Black Affairs Council as one of the County’s Women of Distinction.

This year’s event will educate, empower and give hope to those affected by breast cancer. It will be held on Saturday, May 4th at the DoubleTree Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center (711 NW 72 Avenue) in Miami.

“We’re thrilled to have Carla as our keynote speaker,” said Barbara Garcia, co-chair.  “Her message is so meaningful.  It will focus on her own health journey while emphasizing the importance of early cancer detection and organ donation awareness.”

After receiving a kidney transplant in 2000 and experiencing two triple-negative breast cancers (2005 and 2007) Carla and her husband, Marlon Hill, started the Carla Hill & Hazel Bethel Breast Cancer and Organ Donation Fund held at the Miami Foundation.  The fund also celebrates her mother’s triumphant survival of breast cancer and raises money for research and awareness of cancer and organ donation.

Hill earned a bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Secondary Education from Florida State University. She taught for 10 years in the Miami-Dade County Public School System including seven years at her high school alma mater, New World School of the Arts.

Most recently, Hill worked as the Education and Outreach Manager at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center which is managed by Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affairs. Her work has enabled her to promote the arts to communities in South Florida and around the nation. She is currently a TV host with South Florida’s PBS Station (WPBT).
