Vibrant fashion accessories designed by Jasmine Anthony, a New World School of the Arts college graphic design student, lent a colorful flair to attendees of the 2022 Legislative Session in Tallahassee.

Worn by hundreds of guests, Jasmine’s design became the latest addition to the rich collection of NWSA Miami-Dade County Days ties and scarves, coveted each year in Tallahassee during the month of February. These limited-edition accessories have become a tradition for New World School of the Arts and a popular collectors’ item among political, community and civic leaders, as well as amid arts and education supporters.

The ties and scarves are distributed in Tallahassee and proudly worn by guests at the capital to celebrate the annual Miami-Dade County Days, the premier event during the Florida Legislative Session.

To draw inspiration for the New World School of the Arts Dade Days 2022 tie and scarf design, Jasmine explored the underwater ecosystem found in Miami-Dade County.

“A dynamic and diverse geographic area, our local marine world presents us with developed and undeveloped islands, beautiful mangroves, and lush seagrass beds. Home to the only living coral reef in North America, Miami-Dade County’s reef tract stretches the full length of the county, offering a rich and colorful kaleidoscope of sea life,” she said. “This was the central theme of my design which I presented through colorful and intricate curves and line drawings.”

Rosario Martinez-Cañas, Graphic Design professor at New World School of the Arts, said, “This year’s Miami-Dade Days event highlights the importance of understanding that things don’t always work out the way we expect them to. For the past two years, living through a pandemic has changed everyone’s lives. Our students have learned that they must be willing to adjust and accept that at times we cannot control change and disruption. These unprecedented circumstances taught our students that ingenuity is now more important than ever and that it is imperative that they don’t allow unwelcome events to defeat them.

They must find new ways to carry out their goals, their projects and their art — a valuable lesson for any creative thinker and artist.”

The NWSA ties and scarves project is a continuing partnership that was forged 34 years ago between New World School of the Arts and Miami-Dade County Days to bring awareness to Miami-Dade County during the annual Florida Spring Legislative Session.

College graphic design students at New World School of the Arts compete annually to create a beautiful cutting-edge design that represents Miami-Dade County and its municipalities, celebrating the diversity and richness of South Florida’s impact on the State of Florida.

Selected by a jury from the pool of graphic design student competitors, the selected designer is publicly recognized in Tallahassee during the two-day Legislative Session.

A student at New World School of the Arts’ visual arts college program, Jasmine Anthony is working towards a BFA degree with a concentration in graphic design. Always thinking outside the box, Anthony likes to push the boundaries of her creativity while keeping in mind the needs of her clients. A natural problem solver, she often capitalizes on changing conditions to enhance her creative process and offer interesting and innovative perspectives and designs.

A Florida center of excellence in the visual and performing arts, New World School of the Arts is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College, and University of Florida.
