The Life Time Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created by Life Time Inc., recently contributed $50,000 to support The Education Fund Food Forests for Schools program.
The initiative, now involving 28,000 students across Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), aims to foster a deeper connection between students, healthy food options, and the environment.
“It’s an honor for our Life Time Foundation to partner with The Education Fund to grow Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ School Food Forest program, connecting the school community with healthy food options, healthy eating habits, as well as invaluable time in nature,” said Sarah Emola, Life Time director of ESG Programs and the Life Time Foundation.
“We applaud The Education Fund’s work to develop more engaged, attentive, physically healthy and less stressed students, which is at the heart of the Life Time Foundation’s mission. Together, we’re creating a wonderful collaboration that empowers all kids to live healthy, happy lives,” Emola added.
The Life Time Foundation presented the $50,000 check to The Education Fund during the 10th annual Taste of Education Event at Hialeah Park on Feb. 27. The event celebrated the culinary talents of Miami-Dade County’s public high school and middle school students, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills to hundreds of guests, including judges, renowned local chefs, food journalists, and industry leaders.
Distinguished figures present at the event included Miami-Dade County School Board chair Mari Tere Rojas, School Board members Roberto Alonso and Mary Blanco, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools chief academic officer Lourdes Diaz.
Cash prizes were awarded to culinary students and their culinary programs, enabling them to enhance their programs with state-of-the-art equipment and ingredients. Special recognition went to Kinloch Park Middle School, winner of the People’s Choice Award for their delectable French Dip sandwich. The Taste of Education 2024 Culinary Champions included Miami Jackson Senior High, Miami Springs Senior High, Michael M. Krop Senior High School, Miami Coral Park Senior High School, Miami Springs Senior High School, and Redland Middle School.
The Education Fund Food Forests for Schools program allows students to develop a deeper understanding and connection between health and their environment. The program engages students to plant and maintain edible gardens and Food Forests on school grounds while using those gardens to learn about healthy eating and environmental sustainability.
From a pilot program in just five schools, the Food Forests for Schools initiative has grown to 71 schools, with diverse populations from mostly lower-income families. The primary objective of Food Forests for Schools is to significantly improve eating patterns in children and their families while also improving students’ academic achievement.
The Life Time Foundation is a nonprofit founded by Life Time Inc. – the lead sponsor of the Miami Marathon. Currently, there are two Life Time athletic country clubs in the Miami area, one in Coral Gables, and the newest location is at The Falls.
