The 20th anniversary of the world-renowned Life Time Miami Marathon is set for Sunday, Feb. 6, 2022 with an International field of 15,000 runners ready to once again experience the culture and beauty that make Miami one of the world’s most extraordinary running destinations.
Participants from all 50 states and nearly 70 countries will navigate the streets of downtown Miami, Miami Beach and Coconut Grove in a return to normal for the race which was creatively transitioned into a virtual format in 2021.
Driven by the demand of thousands of runners who will hit the pavement for the half and full marathon distances, the event achieved its earliest sellout ever in early November with more than 7,000 people adding themselves to a waitlist for a chance to run.
“For 19 years, our Miami Marathon team has kept the athlete-point-of-view front and center and our 2022 event is poised to be our best yet,” said Frankie Ruiz, Miami Marathon co-founder and Chief Running Officer at Life Time. “The sellout of this iconic 20th anniversary race has Miami buzzing.”
Seventy-six runners will be competing in the race for the 20th time, having participated every year since Ruiz co-founded the event.
The marathon will begin at 6 a.m. on January 24 and will start outside the American Airlines Arena, travel back and forth to South Beach across the MacArthur Causeway, then through Downtown Miami, Coconut Grove, and Brickell Avenue before finishing at Bayfront Park with an always jubilant post-event celebration.
The course is a USTAF-certified, Boston-qualifying, flat course that showcases the best views of Miami’s cityscape and waterways. As one of the most internationally-friendly events in the industry, Life Time personalizes the race bib of each runner with their home country’s flag.
Also taking place on Sunday, more than 1,000 South Florida middle school students will participate in the Kids Run Miami event at 11 a.m. The 1.2-mile run from the county courthouse on Flagler Street to the finish line culminates a 15-week, full-marathon distance running program designed to promote fitness to local youth in partnership with local schools.
Another nearly 3,000 participants will take part in the annual Tropical 5K, an upbeat family event held Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. from Watson Island to the southern tip of Miami Beach.
In addition, the popular Miami Famous Expo, annually attended by more than 35,000 runners and fitness enthusiasts, will move back to Miami Beach Convention Center Friday and Saturday, February 4-5.
