Local animal rescue giving dog new pair of back legs
Ryder, a one year old German Shepherd, will be getting a brand new set of bionic back legs very soon.

Meet Ryder, a one year old German Shepherd who will be getting a brand new set of bionic back legs very soon.

Picolini’s, a local animal rescue in Coconut Grove, rescued Ryder in April from a backyard breeder situation. His mother gave birth to three pups, the first two stillborn and Ryder was born with no back paws.

For a whole year, Ryder learned to overcompensate using his front muscles and front legs to maneuver himself around. Ryder was never given any type of therapy or fitted for any type of prosthetics during his first 11 months. This has been a travesty for Ryder, a very happy, intelligent and eager-to- please young shepherd.

Fast forward, Picolini’s established a GoFundMe campaign to raise donations for his various medical needs. Through the generosity and support of individuals within the community, several thousands of dollars have been raised which have been used to purchase his fiberglass prosthetics, receiving hydrotherapy treatments, now and in the future, as well as potential socialization and training should that be needed in his new fur-ever home environment.

Ryder is under the watchful eye and care of Dr. Mirta Sanchez at Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami, where she believes Ryder’s age, health and zest for life will enhance his ability to adapt fully to his new found life with prosthetics.

Ryder is seeking his “fur-ever” home with that special human who, like his doctors and many followers and supporters, realizes his true potential. He needs a home where he will be “included” and not “excluded.” Ideally, Ryder likely is best suited in a single story home and a work from home environment during this phase of his adjustment and transition. Individuals who are familiar with the German Shepherd breed know that they are wonderful companions, smart, intelligent, true and loyal to their owners, and Ryder is no different.

Many new tail wagging adventures await this happy-go-lucky young boy. If you feel you are that special human that can be a part of his life’s journey, feel free to reach out for more information. Send email to karlahuffman61@gmail.com.
