Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig’s disease. On Saturday, May 3, the local community will gather to support people living with ALS at the 2025 Walk to Defeat ALS Miami.
The Walk to Defeat ALS is the world’s largest signature event focused on supporting people living with ALS and their families. Through Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising efforts, the ALS Association has been able to dramatically accelerate the fight against ALS by funding the development of new ALS treatments, by discovering new ALS genes, by creating new global research collaborations, and by significantly expanding access to ALS care.
“Three years ago, our world shifted when Mary Rose (our amazing mom) received the diagnosis of ALS. It was a tough blow, but knowing Mom, we knew she wouldn’t let it break her,” said Patricia Salazar of Miami.
“Throughout her life, even as a single mom, Mary Rose has always shown incredible strength and resilience. She’s the one who taught us to face challenges head-on and never give up. Now, it’s our turn to show her the same unwavering support,” Patricia said. “Although it’s tough, especially in the heat, mom’s determination to keep going inspires us all. She may struggle, but she never gives up, and that strength fuels us to show up year after year.”
Patricia’s Walk team in honor of her mom is called Tough Cookies Crew: A Resilient Batch. “We’re excited for this year’s event and the new venue! It’s been a challenging journey, but we’re proud to be part of a resilient batch. The tough cookies that we are, we’re all in this together, raising awareness and supporting others fighting ALS,” Patricia said.
Walk to Defeat ALS events are more than fundraisers – it’s a movement that unites the community in support of those affected by ALS. Many who participate have a loved one battling ALS while others participate in memory of a loved one who has lost their fight. Some participate simply because they want to make ALS a livable disease for everyone, everywhere while we tirelessly search for a cure.
“The Walk to Defeat ALS in North Miami brings together the entire local community,” said Calaneet Balas, president and CEO of the ALS Association. “We are united by a shared purpose—to make ALS livable for all until we find a cure. We are truly grateful for the incredible support of participants, volunteers, and sponsors from North Miami who make this memorable event happen.”
Whether you walk in honor, in memory, or in support, your efforts matter and benefit the ALS Associations to support innovative global research, nationwide advocacy and local care services. The event is emceed by Najahe Sherman of CBS4 Miami. Sponsorships for the event are also available. Registered participants who raise $100 or more will receive an exclusive Walk to Defeat ALS t-shirt to wear with pride. There’s still time to get involved for 2025 Walk to Defeat ALS Miami.
