Local interfaith nonprofit partners with national organization to combat hate
Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush addresses the community.

Mosaic Miami, formerly MCCJ, has made a historic partnership with Washington, DC-based Interfaith Alliance, the national nonprofit founded in 1994 to advocate for religious freedom and pluralism.

Together, they will counter the divisiveness and complexities of this time, and because faith communities are uniquely positioned to move the needle forward, the two storied organizations whose missions are now more important than ever, will find beauty in diversity by way of a series of events in Miami, one of which was open to the public on Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Coral Gables Congregation United Church of Christ.

Mosaic Miami hosted a keynote address, titled “Mobilizing Against Christian Nationalism,” by The Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, an ordained Baptist Minister, as well as president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance. Rev. Raushenbush’s address covered why Christian nationalism is among the greatest threats to American democracy, and how religious pluralism – a distinct and important part of the American identity – can be the best antidote to challenging political and religious extremism.

“In the face of rising antisemitism, Islamophobia, and Christian nationalism, people of diverse faiths and beliefs are uniquely positioned to fight back and offer a positive vision for the future,” Rev. Raushenbush said. “Public figures in the U.S., including some here in Florida, are abusing their positions of power to impose one extremist worldview on the rest of us. The vast majority of us who believe in a truly inclusive democracy will not sit idly by.”
Raushenbush, a longtime leader in the interfaith movement, is the great-grandson of the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis and great-grandson of Baptist theologian Walter Rauschenbusch, a key figure in the Social Gospel movement.

“From local school boards to state legislatures, Christian nationalists are bent on co-opting our institutions to further their theocratic vision for America,” said Maureen O’Leary, director of Field and Organizing at Interfaith Alliance. “But people of faith and conscience in Florida and across the country are responding to meet this moment by defending our democracy, leading with a message of inclusivity, justice, and equality.”

“Partnering with Interfaith Alliance is our effort to remind people that America was always intended to be a nation that valued individuals of various faiths, nationalities, and cultures,” said Matt Anderson, executive director for Mosaic Miami, which continues to offer safe spaces at events where people can hold conversations in support of uniting and engaging the community in a more positive way.
