Florida Health Care Association (FHCA) recently awarded $3,750 in scholarships to help six front-line caregivers — including one form Miami — achieve their goal of becoming nurses.

Each recipient earned an FHCA Bruce Taylor Scholarship Award, which assists the best and brightest among direct care staff working in FHCA member nursing centers and assisted living facilities.

Among those receiving the FHCA Bruce Taylor Scholarship Award for the fall cycle was Leocadia Vargas, Housekeeping Laundry director at Jackson Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center in Miami. She received $750 toward pursuing an RN degree.

Each scholarship recipient is currently enrolled in a program to advance their clinical studies, has demonstrated a commitment to the residents entrusted to their care, and shown leadership potential among their peers.

“Florida needs nurses, and FHCA is pleased to support these health care heroes as they advance their clinical studies,” said Emmett Reed, CEO of Florida Health Care Association.

“These caregivers have already shown their passion for the profession and compassion for their residents. We commend them for their ambition to further their education and help Florida meet a growing need.”

Each recipient shared a personal story as part of their application, describing why they are choosing to advance their nursing career.

The Bruce Taylor Scholarship was established to provide resources for FHCA member nursing center and assisted living facility staff to further their education and pursue their career goals of becoming a nurse. Scholarships are awarded twice a year and funded through the Florida Health Care Education & Development Foundation, the Association’s charitable foundation.
