Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) unveiled a redesigned, technology-rich Innovation Space at Palm Springs Middle School’s media center on Thursday. The new space includes a “Jump ‘n Learn” Active Floor, a Makerspace area with robotics for hands-on learning, and new furniture in an open area where students can engage in creative group activities.

“Without their support, without the generosity of our partners, we wouldn’t have a space like this for students to keep their learning going,” said Daniel Mateo, Assistant Superintendent, School Choice and Parental Options.  “We have some cool stuff for you guys to engage in, some actual project-based learning, these Makerspace kits. This is just a fun space to be in, and I want you to enjoy it every day.”

The Active Floor “Jump ‘n Learn” is designed for students to play virtual soccer, race cars, and many other games, but they can also take interactive quizzes that align with the math and science curriculum. The Makerspace area includes robotics, as well as arts and crafts, and other hands-on technology.

“This space provides another area for students to work in groups, collaborate, and problem solve, especially in math and science”, said Palm Springs Middle School Principal Heriberto Sanchez. “To reach this generation, we must make it fun.”

The media center redesign also included modular, comfortable furniture to accommodate a variety of uses. There are also two screens for gaming purposes.

“This isn’t just a bigger, brighter space, it’s an entirely new atmosphere that makes you want to stay and unwind,” said Mariann Garcia, an eighth grader at Palm Springs Middle School. “I hope new students explore and enjoy it because not all libraries are like this.”

Over the next two years, a total of 18 M-DCPS middle school media centers will be redesigned to meet the unique social, emotional, and academic needs of students and teachers. The project was funded by a $2 million partnership between M-DCPS, the College Football Playoff Foundation, and the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship Game Host Committee.
