U.S. Century Bank, one of the largest community banks headquartered in Florida, has announced that board member Maria C. Alonso has been named CEO and regional dean of Northeastern University’s Miami Campus.
Northeastern is a global research university and the world leader in experiential learning. Northeastern has 14 campuses across North America and the United Kingdom.
Previously, Alonso served as president and CEO of United Way Miami, one of the region’s largest philanthropies. She is a recognized community leader with more than 25 years of experience across banking, marketing, social responsibility, and community engagement. Alonso joined the board of U.S. Century Bank in April 2022.
“We are extremely pleased to congratulate Maria on her new role with Northeastern University,” said Luis de la Aguilera, U.S. Century Bank president and CEO. “Maria has deep roots in our community and her passion for improving access to opportunities for all South Florida residents have been a hallmark of her distinguished professional career. Northeastern University has tapped one of our best to lead this new campus.”
Northeastern’s 14th campus will be based in Wynwood and offer educational programs focused on technology, healthcare and finance.

Alonso’s involvement in community organizations has included: New World School of the Arts (past Executive Committee chair), Leadership Florida, International Women’s Forum, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (past board chair), Miami-Dade Beacon Council (past One Community, One Goal co-chair), Camillus House, Miami Dade College Foundation, The Miami Foundation, and Teach for America. Alonso is a recognized community leader having received numerous awards celebrating her civic, business and philanthropic contributions to the South Florida community.
