Mayor Gimenez appoints Marquez new communications director/senior advisor

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez has appointed Myriam Marquez as the new communications director and senior advisor for the Office of the Mayor where she will oversee a staff of 150 and the communications for the county’s 25 departments, including the Miami-Dade Aviation department, PortMiami and the Water and Sewer department, along with the 311 Contact Center.

Marquez worked for the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald for more than 12 years where she began as an assistant city editor and rose through the ranks to serve as the Miami Herald’s editorial page editor, and later vice president and executive editor of El Nuevo Herald. She also was an editor for the Orlando Sentinel and Tribune Co., serving 18 years as enterprise editor, senior columnist, and editorial writer.

“We look forward to welcoming Myriam to the county and my administration,” Mayor Gimenez said.

“Myriam is an expert with nearly 30 years of experience in innovative and strategic communications. Her demonstrated history in her field will be an asset to the county’s communications team,” he added.

“I am honored to become a part of Mayor Gimenez’s administration, especially during this most exciting time when people are connecting in new ways to build community through social media and civic engagement,” Marquez said.

“I share the mayor’s vision of improving our residents’ quality of life in cost-efficient ways that protect their pocketbooks, and I am excited about all the innovations underway. I look forward to public service. Helping our residents with accurate information to find the services they need will be job one,” she added.

Marquez holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, and a minor in political science and Latin America from the University of Maryland.

Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, she graduated from Miami Dade College with an associate degree. She is scheduled to start working at the Office of the Mayor on Apr. 2.
