Miami Dade College Foundation recently awarded 100 scholarships to deserving students as a result of a successful I AM MDC Day on Sept. 6, MDC’s annual day of giving and pride.
“I come from a family of five and I am the first to go to college. It has not been easy to pay for college, but with the help of financial aid and this scholarship, I will be able to continue pursuing my dreams,” said Joseline Donoso, a journalism student pursuing an associate degree at MDC. “I want to thank all those who make this beautiful journey possible for us.”
The formal announcement was made on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at a private event in which student scholarship recipients had the opportunity to meet donors who funded these and other scholarships this year.
“As dedicated members of this community, it’s a privilege to watch students find their passion and pursue their dreams,” said Julie Grimes, chair of the MDC Foundation Board of Directors. “We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community on I AM MDC Day to help turn aspiring students into Miami Dade College graduates.”
I AM MDC Day raised a total $228,543, more than three times the amount raised in its first year, with funds benefiting student scholarships and academic programs. The first $50,000 in donations was matched dollar for dollar, thanks to lead sponsor Bank of America. Additional I AM MDC Day sponsors included Geico, Starquix, Shutts and Bowen, VIA Design Studio, South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union, Off The Grille, The New Tropic, and Lulu’s Ice Cream.
Organized by the MDC Foundation, I AM MDC Day celebrates the founding of Miami Dade College on Sept. 6, 1960 and raises funds for student scholarships and programs.
Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami officially proclaimed Sept. 6 as I AM MDC Day. The eight campuses were a sea of MDC blue, social media was awash on the official hashtag #IAMMDC and gifts of every size were made to MDC. For more information, visit www.mdc.edu/iammdc.
