Emily Andrea Sendin, Miami Dade College (MDC) Padrón Campus English, literature and creative writing professor, has been awarded the Media Literacy Award by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
The Media Literacy Award is a prestigious national prize given to only one educator each year. It showcases NCTE members who have developed innovative approaches for integrating media analysis and composition into their instruction.
A selecting committee noted “the breadth and range of ways Prof. Sendin engages media literacy in her courses at Miami Dade College. The student project exemplars exhibited strength within and across the four award criteria, particularly in terms of community collaborations and the ways students are invited to create and analyze media texts. Media literacy principles were embedded throughout the projects described, and the applicant’s candid descriptions of successes and ongoing goals speak to the challenges of enacting this work. The committee appreciates the wide range of student projects and candid reflections present in the digital portfolio.”
Over the course of her more than 22 years at MDC, Prof. Sendin has been named an Endowed Teaching Chair, Fulbright Scholar, and Florida Campus Contact Service-Learning Faculty of the Year. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s in English with a concentration in women’s studies from Florida International University. Her areas of expertise are African American literature, postcolonialism and feminist theories, and media studies.
At MDC, she teaches global sustainability and earth literacy studies, service-learning, and Honors College courses. She is the founding advisor of Urbana, the student-led, award-winning literary and arts magazine at the Padrón Campus. She also is the founding advisor of Hermione’s Army, a chapter of Fandom Forward, an international organization with a mission to use the power of story for social activism. In addition, Prof. Sendin is the co-founder of the Tengo un Sueño 17-year educational program of FNE International. Her passions include books, art, traveling, teaching, writing, and service.
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. For more than 100 years, NCTE has worked with its members to offer journals, publications, and resources; to further the voice and expertise of educators as advocates for their students at the local and federal levels, and to share lesson ideas, research, and teaching strategies through its Annual Convention and other professional learning events.
