MDFR reminds public September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, a month that focuses on informing the public on the importance of taking the initiative to prepare for emergencies that can affect their homes, businesses and communities.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) and the Miami-Dade Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will mark this occasion by utilizing social media all month long to assist South Florida residents with their efforts to prepare in case of a disaster.

“We are now in the historical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season,” said Curt Sommerhoff, Miami-Dade Office of Emergency Management director. “If you have not yet done so, please Get A Kit – Make A Plan – Stay Informed!”

Another good way to stay informed is by registering with Miami-Dade Alerts. Residents of Miami-Dade County who enroll in this alerting system can receive SMS (text) messages and/or emails providing emergency and public safety information such as weather advisories including tornado and tropical storm/hurricane warnings.

To subscribe to Miami-Dade Alerts, sign up at www.miamidade.gov/alerts. Standard message and data rates may apply as defined in the user’s wireless-service rate plan.

The Office of Emergency Management also has produced an educational video in three languages, in an effort to keep residents informed about disaster preparedness.
