Miami native First Lt. Jose D. Toranzo, a graduate of Coral Gables High School and assistant director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, will be the special guest conductor when the South Florida Clarinet Choir “Les Art Nouveau Chalumeaux” performs its 10th anniversary concert on Wednesday, July 31, at FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center, 10910 SW 17 St.

The free concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to Lt. Toranzo, other members of “The President’s Own” Marine Band — clarinetists Gunnery Sgts. Zachary Gauvain and Alexander Bullard — will perform alongside the highly acclaimed (all-volunteer) 55-member Interscholastic Ensemble comprised of top-level high school, college and university students; clarinet instructors and music educators.

“We are presenting a very diverse and entertaining program to commemorate this momentous occasion,” said Richard A. Zogaib, the ensemble’s director and former music librarian and clarinetist with “The President’s Own.” “We are very honored to have my colleagues performing with us. South Florida doesn’t want to miss this.”

After graduating from Coral Gables Senior High School in 2014, Lt. Toranzo enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to recruit/combat training, and then to the Naval School of Music. He served tours of duty as both a horn player and instructor (among other roles) in the Fleet Marine Music Program. Lt. Toranzo studied horn with Russell Seifter, former principal horn of the Miami Symphony Orchestra.

Lt. Toranzo assumed his duties as assistant director of “The President’s Own” on Mar. 1, conducting the Marine Band and Chamber Orchestra in the national capital region and at the White House.

Founded by an Act of Congress in 1798, the Marine Band is the nation’s oldest continuously active musical organization. Its mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Gaston Gosselin, director of development for the South Florida Clarinet Choir, has written a special piece to celebrate the anniversary event. Accompanied by the ensemble, Johnathan Arce will perform the final movement from Camille Saint-Säens’ Third Symphony on FIU’s majestic 4,226-pipe Schantz pipe organ. Soloists Leticia Jack (soprano) and Dr. Kelsey Gallagher (clarinet) will grace the stage with works by George Gershwin and Carl Maria von Weber.
