The redesign of the Mercedes Benz AMG E 63 S Sedan makes the 2021 model one to watch.
As far as I am concerned the luxury is icing on a cake that is really built around its high performance engine.
With a handcrafted 603 horsepower and variable-torque AMG Performance 4MATIC+, the E 63 S Sedan is one of the quickest Mercedes-AMG models yet. It also is one of the most luxurious ways that Mercedes Benz has incorporated track tech into street models.
What you get for the $107,500 sticker price is a quick vehicle. The 2021 AMG E 63 S Sedan reaches 60 miles per hour in less than a handful of seconds. This five-person capacity sedan gets 16 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway.
The AMG-developed V8 is engineered for today’s high demand for performance and power. Generating extreme output from modest displacement, the 603-hp V8 biturbo engine is the most powerful E-Class engine yet. Its massive torque thunders to a 627 pound-feet peak at just 2,500 rpm, and maintains it to 4,500 rpm. That kind of power rockets you to 60 miles per hour in 3.3 seconds on the way to a 186 mph top track speed.
What’s better than one turbo? How about a pair of turbos nested inside the “V” of the engine. What this does is send their compressed charge from each turbo to its bank of cylinders via an extremely short path, with near-zero pressure loss or turbo lag.
In addition to adapting the intake and exhaust valve lift, the AMG E 63’s Camtronic system seamlessly deactivates cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 in low-load conditions, to boost efficiency. That is an amazing feature that makes it possible to take longer trips on a tank of gas, while giving you the choice of igniting the idle cylinders within milliseconds. So power is always available when you want it.
Lastly, the cylinder walls of the diecast aluminum block are created in an AMG-patented process that benefits performance, efficiency and durability.
Pulling this all together is a unique detail that makes the 2021 AMG E 63 S Sedan your own. Not only is the AMG engine still hand-built, but it is signed by its own craftsman.
For me, the draw of this car is all about what is under the hood. I’m mesmerized by its power and efficiency. At the end of the day, the design with large, bold Mercedes Benz badging, makes this vehicle a delight to drive.
