Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e 4Matic Hybrid is a big SUV

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e 4Matic has got a big engine and a big heart. Both are important to driving and picking that car to be your mode of transportation around this busy town.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e 4Matic, which starts at $69,500 and runs on a 381 horsepower 2.0-liter engine, seats five.

The advanced GLE SUV leaps farther ahead in a new plug-in hybrid that pairs turbo and electric boost in a fresh new look. Its versatile cabin offers new, more user-friendly innovations like an intuitive voice assistant and online music streaming.

What I get excited about when reviewing Mercedes-Benz vehicles is that the company’s engineering-centric design gives me a lot of information about performance. The car feels fast, but why?

Here is why. Mercedes-Benz’s advanced innovation pairs turbo boost with electrification in the GLE 450e. A spirited and efficient 248-horsepower 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine teams with a plug-in hybrid electric motor for a combined total of 381 horsepower and a quick 5.8-second 0-60 time. Along with the long range of a gasoline engine, the electric motor and 23.3kWh battery can propel the GLE 450e for up to 38 miles on its own, allowing you to handle some everyday driving gas-free.

The SUV utilizes advanced plug-in hybrid technology. It’s already in its fourth generation and delivers several electric-car benefits while retaining the convenience of a gasoline engine. The compact electric motor can deliver a substantial boost in power and torque, or let you drive up to 38 miles on battery power alone. Charging can come from the gas engine and regenerative braking, or plug it into an ordinary AC outlet to go from 10 percent to fully charged in just 2.75 hours. Standard 60kW DC charging can go from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. That’s less than any comedy on a streamer.

Another great feature is that the 4Matic has fully variable all-wheel drive. That’s important because this special system can automatically send from zero to 100 percent of the engine’s torque to either axle, front or rear. A transfer case with a multi-disc clutch can vary the torque distribution based on the driving conditions at the moment. While this allows for precise response to varying surfaces and individual-wheel traction off-road and in inclement weather, it also can enhance handling in any season by favorably influencing the vehicle’s rotation.

On top of all that, the interior feels like you are in a luxury vehicle with all the modern frills.

You get dual 12.3-inch displays, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats with power adjustment, a power sunroof, and an MBUX infotainment as standard. This includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation and an eight-speaker sound system.

I really enjoyed the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e 4Matic and I think you will, too. Give it a spin and let me know what you think.
