Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) has combined the Omni and Brickell Loops to run in Full Loop mode until mid-June 2023, while important improvements are completed as part of the necessary Metromover Upgrade Project.
Metromover has been in service nearly 40 years, first opening to the public in April 1986.
While the system has expanded and vehicles have been replaced, major subsystems responsible for keeping the Automated People Mover (APM) functioning have reached the end of their design and utility life spans. As such, DTPW is taking an aggressive approach to replacing and repairing these subsystems to ensure reliability and accessibility for many years to come.
“Miami-Dade is making historic investments in infrastructure across the county, including throughout our transit system. We’ve made repairs, improvements, and strengthened service on the Metromover system, but we’re excited to continue with the systemwide upgrade our residents deserve,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Along with safe neighborhoods, quality housing, and good jobs, everyone deserves a reliable transportation network that connects them to opportunity. With this project, we’re building a more future ready system that’s both resilient and reliable for residents and visitors alike.”
Miami-Dade County’s investment in the Metromover Upgrade Project will provide the following benefits for passengers:
• Improved system reliability to reduce service disruptions.
• Increased vehicle frequency which will reduce wait times.
• Increased service flexibility to move more riders in less time during special events.
• Ability to run loops in different directions when needed.
• Smoother operations, especially during braking and acceleration.
• Ready the system for any future expansion.
The Metromover Upgrade Project began construction in July 2022 and is expected to be completed in May 2025.
The schedule for the Full Loop may change due to inclement weather or any other unforeseen circumstances.
Miami-Dade Transit riders are encouraged to plan accordingly for the change in operation. Download the GO Miami-Dade Transit app to track your trip.
