John C. Norris has been appointed as the new Public Works director for
the City of Miami Beach, a key position that oversees the city’s cleanliness efforts, solid waste collection, street improvements and sanitary sewer system. The award-winning department is responsible for implementing projects to replace aging infrastructure and improve the city’s overall resilience to rising sea levels.
“John joins the City of Miami Beach with nearly 15 years of experience in local government,
including senior leadership roles in three cities,” said Miami Beach City Manager Eric T.
Carpenter, who selected Norris to lead the same department he once headed. “We’re very
fortunate to have someone with John’s exemplary track record as we continue to implement innovative measures to address rising seas and extend the life of our infrastructure.”
Having previously served as director of Public Works in the City of Coral Springs, Norris holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina and a master’s in public administration from Columbia Southern University.
“I am delighted to put my expertise to work for a world-renowned destination like Miami Beach,” said Norris, whose appointment received the unanimous consent of the Miami Beach City Commission on July 23.
The Miami Beach Public Works Department holds accreditation through the American Public
Works Association and is a large, full-service organization with capabilities that include
planning, design, construction, maintenance and repair as well as operation of city
infrastructure to include utility systems, city streets, bridges and lights. The department is made up of over 500 employees, including professional, semiprofessional and licensed professionals working in administration, engineering, transportation management, streets and streetlights, environmental resources management and property management. The department consists of the water, sewer, stormwater and sanitation divisions.
