Miami-Dade 250 Advisory Committee first meeting
The meeting brought together a diverse group of civic, cultural, educational, business, tribal, philanthropic and faith leaders.

Miami-Dade County on Jan.20 convened the inaugural meeting of the Miami-Dade 250 “We Are America” Celebration Advisory Committee, marking the official launch of the county’s planning efforts for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

The meeting, chaired by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, brought together a diverse group of civic, cultural, educational, business, tribal, philanthropic, and faith leaders to begin shaping a countywide framework for Miami-Dade’s participation in the national Semiquincentennial in 2026.

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, Miami-Dade has a unique opportunity to reflect the full American story, one shaped by diversity, resilience, and shared values,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “This committee brings together voices from across our community to help ensure that our commemoration is inclusive, educational, and meaningful for residents in every neighborhood.”

During the meeting, committee members received an overview of national, state, and local America 250 efforts, including initiatives led by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and the State of Florida’s America250FL Advisory Commission. County staff also presented an initial conceptual framework for Miami-Dade 250, outlining early planning across three focus areas: community engagement, communications, and fundraising.

Proposed engagement ideas include civic discussions, days of service, student and artist initiatives, cultural programming, and a signature July 4th, 2026 celebration designed to be free and accessible to the public. Committee members also discussed guiding principles for the effort, emphasizing civic engagement, education, cultural expression, and reflecting Miami-Dade County’s diverse histories and communities.

The Miami-Dade 250 Advisory Committee serves in an advisory capacity and will provide ongoing recommendations as planning progresses. The committee is supported by the Office of the Mayor and is expected to operate through 2026.
