Over 70 senior dogs are waiting for loving Miamians, and adoption fees are waived through December 31
While senior dogs “pack the sleigh” at Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS) this holiday season, they also slay at love, loyalty, and spreading cheer—which is why the shelter is launching its “Seniors Sleigh Too” adoption promotion, running today through December 31. The campaign highlights how senior dogs excel as exceptional companions. Throughout December, it is free to adopt senior dogs (age seven and older) and dogs who have been at the shelter more than six months.
All adoptable dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, and each adopter will receive a complimentary gift bundle including a cozy blanket, toy, and dog treats.
With more than 70 senior dogs currently waiting for homes, MDAS and Best Friends Animal Society, a leading national
“Senior pets bring unmatched love and companionship, and they often adapt quickly to a new home,” said Annette Jose, Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services. “All of our senior dogs would love nothing more than a home to call their own this holiday, which is why we need the community’s support this December to help these deserving pets find the loving people they’ve been waiting for. With no fee to adopt, the ‘Seniors Sleigh Too’ promotion is the perfect opportunity to make that happen.”
“Senior pets are often the most overlooked in shelters, yet they can make some of the most loving and easygoing companions,” said Scott Giacoppo, Director of National Shelter Support, Best Friends Animal Society. “Many have lived in homes before, are already house-trained making it an even easier transition from shelter to home.”
There are a wide variety of breeds, sizes and personalities to choose from and because senior pets are frequently passed over in favor of younger pets, MDAS staff and volunteers having spent more time with the senior petsand can provide adopters with valuable insight into each dog’s personality—helping connect them with the right match for their home and lifestyle.

* No-kill is defined by a 90% save rate for animals entering a shelter and is a meaningful and common-sense benchmark for measuring lifesaving progress. Typically, the number of pets who are suffering from irreparable medical or behavioral issues that compromise their quality of life and prevent them from being rehomed is not more than 10% of all dogs and cats entering shelters. For any community to be no-kill, all stakeholders in that community must work together to achieve and sustain that common goal while prioritizing community safety and good quality of life for pets as guiding no-kill principles. This means cooperation among animal shelters, animal rescue groups, government agencies, community members and other stakeholders, all committed to best practices and protocols.
