The Miami-Dade County Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Plus (LGBTQIA+) Advisory Board and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava kicked off LGBTQ Pride Month on June 3 at the Stephen P. Clark Center. As part of the ceremony, the board unveiled Standing on the Shoulders of Heroes, an exhibit from the Stonewall National Museum & Archives. The display honors pioneering figures in LGBTQIA+ history whose courage continues to inspire the fight for equality and inclusion. The exhibit will remain on public view throughout the month of June.
During the event, Mayor Levine Cava delivered remarks, and the LGBTQIA+ Advisory Board was honored with two municipal proclamations—one from Miami Gardens Councilwoman Linda Julien and another from Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez—recognizing the board’s commitment to advancing LGBTQIA+ rights and visibility. A proclamation was also recently received from the City of North Miami, with upcoming presentations scheduled from the City of Miami and North Bay Village.
The board also recognized Steve N. Adkins, who attended the event and was honored for his 25 years of service as president of the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Scott Galvin, a longtime North Miami councilman who recently retired after more than 25 years of public service, was acknowledged for his lasting contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community, although he was unable to attend the ceremony.
All meetings and events of the LGBTQIA+ Advisory Board are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend and learn more about the work of the board. Miami-Dade County provides equal access and opportunity in its programs, services, employment, and activities and does not discriminate based on disability.
