The Miami-Dade County Commission recognized Sept. 15-Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month during its Sept. 3 meeting in the Commission Chamber.
The proclamation was presented to the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (HAAB), which released its official 2025 National Hispanic Heritage Calendar of Events.
Commission chair Anthony Rodriguez, vice chair Kionne L. McGhee, and Commissioner Keon Hardemon joined HAAB members for the presentation, with Cathy Burgos, chief community services officer, representing Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. As the program concluded, Commissioners Eileen Higgins and Natalie Milian Orbis also greeted board members and community partners, taking commemorative photos to mark the occasion.
The county’s official Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff ceremony took place at noon, Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First St., Miami. The event featured elected officials, the Consular Corps of Miami, live entertainment, including mariachis for Mexico’s Independence Day, a tribute to Colombia, and a multicultural art exhibit that will remain on display through Oct. 15.
Commissioner-sponsored highlights of the calendar include:
Various dates – Miami International Mall National Hispanic Heritage Celebration, sponsored by Commissioner Juan Carlos “JC” Bermudez.
Oct. 5 – Hispanic Heritage Community Celebration, sponsored by Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert III, at Country Village Park.
Oct. 8 – “Vendor Outreach: How to do business with Miami-Dade County,” sponsored by Sen. René Garcia, District 13, at Gardens Plaza Hall, Milander Center for Arts & Entertainment, Hialeah.
Oct. 11 – “Mi Libro Hispano” Book Fair, sponsored by chair Anthony Rodriguez, at the Westchester Library Health and Wellness Information Center.
In 2023, Miami-Dade County proclaimed September as Cuban Heritage Month, recognizing the profound influence of Cuban culture as an integral part of the county’s identity and cultural legacy.
The Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board invites the community to participate in this year’s activities, which celebrate both tradition and the promise of future generations. For details and the full calendar of events, visit the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Month calendar of events.
All meetings and events of the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend.
