The Miami-Dade County School Board recently recognized the Florida Grand Opera (FGO) for its extraordinary contributions to the cultural vitality of South Florida and its enduring commitment to arts education for the students of Miami-Dade County.

Founded in 1941 as the Opera Guild of Greater Miami, FGO is the oldest continuous performing arts organization in Florida and one of the oldest opera companies in the United States. For more than eight decades, FGO has served as a cultural cornerstone of the region, presenting world-class productions that span timeless masterpieces and contemporary works reflecting the diversity and vibrancy of South Florida.

Representing the organization at the school board meeting were Maria Todaro, general director and CEO; Lourdes Solorzano, executive assistant to the general director; and Tina Vidal- Duarte, chair of the board of directors. The school board also expressed special appreciation to Vidal-Duarte for her generosity and steadfast leadership as a champion of the arts in the community.

Under the visionary leadership of Todaro, FGO is experiencing a renaissance honoring its historic legacy while embracing innovation to reach new audiences. The recent launch of its in-house orchestra, the continued presentation of internationally acclaimed artists, and the cultivation of emerging performers through its Studio Artist Program underscore FGO’s role as a vital force in the American opera landscape.

Beyond its mainstage productions, FGO’s most profound impact may be its unwavering dedication to education and youth engagement. Through student matinees, in-school workshops, professional development for educators, and community outreach initiatives, the organization introduces thousands of students each year to the transformative power of music and storytelling.

Research consistently demonstrates that engagement in music and the arts strengthens cognitive development, enhances academic performance, fosters creativity and critical thinking, and builds confidence. Opera uniquely integrates music, literature, history, language, and visual design, providing students with a multidisciplinary experience that broadens perspectives and deepens understanding.

“For many of our students, attending a Florida Grand Opera performance is their very first experience with live opera,” said vice chair Monica Colucci. “In that moment, when the orchestra begins and a voice fills the hall, horizons expand, imagination awakens, and confidence grows. We are deeply grateful for FGO’s unwavering commitment to our youth and to the cultural vitality of our community.”

Programs such as Voices of Wellness further extend FGO’s impact beyond the classroom, bringing the healing power of music to veterans, first responders, and the broader community.
