Miami-Dade County School Board member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, at the board’s meeting of Oct. 16, proffered Agenda Item B-3, a resolution recognizing the Overtown Youth Center (OYC Miami).

Founded by Alonzo Mourning, the OYC Miami is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of youth, adults, and families in Miami’s urban core. For the past 20 years, OYC Miami has positively impacted nearly 20,000 individuals with a mission to inspire, empower, and enrich the lives of those they serve through a comprehensive and long-term approach aimed at strengthening communities.

Its high-quality services are designed to bridge educational, social, emotional, health, and economic gaps, helping individuals from ages 5 and older reach their full potential.
Overtown Youth Center focuses on five key pillars of impact: education, enrichment and exposure, health, family, and economic sustainability initiatives to advance the socioeconomic trajectory of children and families for future generations.

Each year, OYC Miami serves some 5,000 youth, family members, and adults across Miami-Dade County. Within Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Overtown Youth Center provides essential services to nearly 1,000 students through in-school, after-school, camp, and summer internship programs.

Additionally, over 5,000 adults benefit from OYC Miami programs, which include wraparound support services, family workshops, workforce development, and health services. OYC Miami has conducted more than 200 workshops covering vital topics such as health and wellness, financial literacy, civic engagement, and parent advocacy. It has served approximately 100,000 meals to children during out-of-school hours, after-school programs, and summer camps.

A remarkable 92 percent of OYC Miami students participate in STEAM programs that include art, dance, music, coding, graphic art design, and information technology. The organization’s commitment to education is reflected in its 95 percent graduation rate for high school seniors, with 85 percent increasing their understanding of college and career options.

Notably, 100 percent of their graduates are accepted into college, vocational programs, or the military. Just this past summer, OYC Miami placed 109 students in paid internships, with 83 percent of youth interns creating LinkedIn profiles and 100 percent establishing personal bank accounts.

This resolution recognizes Overtown Youth Center for its dedication to inspiring, empowering, and enriching the lives of those in need and continuously making a profound difference in the community.
