The Miami Design District has announced the unveiling of Pink Spatial Microbiota, a permanent site-specific installation by acclaimed Argentine artist Ad Minoliti (b. 1980).
Spanning four floors of the historic Buick Building, the installation reimagines the stairwell as a digestive system — an internal ecosystem animated by vibrant silhouettes, geometric abstractions, and a queer reframing of art history.
“I was inspired by the digestive system that moves food through the body, and by thinking of these internal spaces as an ecosystem,” Minoliti said. “Microbiota refers to the microorganisms found in all multicellular organisms, crucial for immunologic, hormonal, and metabolic balance. I love how this challenges ideals of purity and hygiene and dismantles the binary of biological good and evil.”
Throughout the stairwell, figures with rectangular heads and swirling legs transform the space into a living, non-binary body. The square forms echo the visual language of the Concrete art movements from Argentina and Uruguay in the 1940s and ’50s, paying tribute to artists of the Madí Group while subverting their legacy with humor and queerness.
Instead of striving for a “universal poetry,” Minoliti’s geometric abstractions invite viewers to reconsider the built environment as a site of multiplicity, humor, and play.
Pink Spatial Microbiota is part of the Miami Design District’s commitment to fostering groundbreaking, site-specific art experiences. Like the district’s renowned Craig Robins Collection, the installation is private but accessible by appointment.
Appointments may be arranged by contacting the Miami Design District at 305-531-8700.
About Ad Minoliti
Ad Minoliti (born Argentina, 1980) blends striking room-sized murals with a critique of modernist ideologies and binary systems. Through immersive installations, paintings, and interdisciplinary projects, they aim to destabilize traditional narratives of modernism.
Central to Minoliti’s work is the Feminist School of Painting, an itinerant series of classes and workshops that reframe art history from a feminist and intersectional perspective, and was presented at the Pinacoteca Sao Paulo (2025), Museo de Arte Moderno Buenos Aires (2020) and Kadist San Francisco (2018), among others.
Minoliti recently created large-scale murals at MCA Chicago’s atrium, and the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, and is working on a forthcoming commission for the Hospital Room UK.
