Miami Dade College’s Miami Fashion Institute on Saturday, Dec. 3 chose the winners of its sixth annual Upcycle Challenge, a competition where students from fifth to 12th grade were tasked with creating outerwear garments using upcycled denim.

This competition was created in the spirit of making sustainable fashion and encourages participants to use their creativity to transform unwanted or waste material into a quality product with artistic and commercial value.

The budget for the project was $15 or less, and student designers had to complete 90 percent of the garment without outside help.

The competition’s winner received an MFI Upcycle Scholarship, which covers full in-state tuition toward an associate in science in fashion merchandising or fashion design, a Fashion Kit valued at $200, and Fashion Design Course Book.

The scholarship is valued at $7,093.20. Second place received a Singer 4423 heavy duty sewing machine sponsored by ArtUp 21.Inc and an Illustration Starter Kit valued at $150.

Third place got a Fashion Design Course Book and other surprise goodies.

The competition was judged by designers Laura LaFrance of Laura LaFrance, LLC, CINTAS; Annette Fedler of Felder Felder; Collen Coughlin of The Full Edit; Fade Zu Grau of Fade Zu Grau Artistry/Project Runway Season 13/All Stars Season 5 and Octavio Aguilar of DOPE TAVIO/Project Runway S19.

Below the names of the winners as well as the students who received honorable mentions:
