With the season of giving well underway, the Miami Heat has launched a new fundraising initiative in collaboration with Achieve Miami’s Teacher Accelerator Program (TAP).
This nonprofit initiative gives fans the opportunity to add one additional dollar (or more) to purchases made at all Miami Heat Store brick and mortar retail locations, online at MiamiHEATStore.com, and at select concession stands throughout the Kaseya Center.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from Add $1 will be donated to the Miami Heat Charitable Fund at the Miami Foundation to benefit Achieve Miami’s Teacher Accelerator Program to help address the teacher shortage in Miami-Dade County and ensure every student attending public school has a full-time teacher.
The partnership launched at a recent Heat vs. Bucks game will be active throughout the season. The Miami Heat and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation began fundraising efforts by pledging to match donations for the Add $1 program dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 throughout the 2023-24 season.
At the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, Florida had over 5,000 vacant teaching positions, with hundreds remaining unfilled in Miami-Dade County. TAP addresses the nationwide teacher shortage by creating a pipeline of talent for the teaching profession through recruiting, preparing, and mentoring aspiring educators.
The “accelerated” program, which is offered by the University of Miami, Florida International University, and Miami-Dade College, welcomes both graduating college students and career-changers with a bachelor’s degree to apply their expertise in the classroom. TAP participants take a one-semester course followed by a six-week paid internship, earn their teaching certification, and then receive a full-time job teaching in a Miami-Dade County Public School classroom.
