Miami Herald Hosts “Best Block” Contest

Coconut Grove’s Commodore Plaza Sure to be a Front Runner The Miami Herald is hosting a contest to find the best block in South Florida and members of the Coconut Grove community have nominated Commodore Plaza as its favorite.

The best block contest is looking for a street that runs the length of one block with buildings that are home to dining, shopping, living and entertainment spaces on either side of the street. Ideal blocks would demonstrate the ability to provide a person with everything they would need to live, work and play in its one-block radius.

“We are excited to partake in a contest that allows urban areas to highlight what makes their neighborhood so special,” said Coconut Grove Business Improvement District Executive Director, Carl Templer. “The cozy street of Commodore is up to the challenge of being named best block in South Florida – at least we think it is.”

Templer and his organization have nominated Commodore Plaza by uploading a descriptive video to the contest’s main page on the Miami Herald website. The video depicts a person’s typical day on the block. Reflecting a stroll through the eyes of a real ‘Grovite,’ video viewers can catch a glimpse of everything Commodore Plaza has to offer from historic brick walkways, to snapshots of popular restaurants, a live yoga class and even an art walk.

“We are excited about the Grove and we hope this video helps make others excited too,” said Sylvano Bignon, owner of GreenStreet Café, which is also featured in the video. “If you love Commodore Plaza like we do, we encourage everyone to vote us into the top spot!”
