During Healthy Vision Month in May, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MLB) celebrated the 32nd anniversary of their Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program during their 17th annual Music Under the Stars: Bon Appétit Miami event.
As a division of MLB, the Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program provides comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses at no cost to underprivileged school children throughout Florida. These exams help detect underlying medical conditions such as amblyopia, torn retina, glaucoma, and others that if left untreated could cause uncorrectable vision loss for children.
The soiree welcomed nearly 300 attendees for an evening of culinary delights, an exciting raffle and silent auction, and sensational sounds by MLB’s own award-winning Miami Lighthouse Band. A special guest performance included Miami Lighthouse Board director Rodrick Miller, CEO The Beacon Council and Norby Rudel, President Rotary Club of Miami.
The celebration honored Dr. Jose L. Dotres, superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, for his leadership and partnership with MLB to service the blind and visually impaired community. Additionally, MLB recognized Florida State Government Champions including Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, Sen. Bryan Avila, Rep. Demi Busatta Cabrera and Rep. David Borrero, and held a special memorial tribute to Dr. Murray Heiken.
“We are elated that the funds raised at this year’s Music Under the Stars will help nearly 1,000 underserved school children receive complimentary eye exams and prescription glasses,” said Virginia Jacko, president and CEO of Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. “Through our Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program, over 7,000 Miami-Dade Public School students will benefit from the gift of vision this year.”
