As the offseason continues, the Miami Marlins look forward to giving back to their community in various ways. In a collaborative effort, the Miami Marlins Foundation had teamed up with UHealth to host the ‘Triple Play 5k’. This family friendly event was hosted at one of the most unique settings in South Florida, LoanDepot Park. The Marlins ‘Triple Play 5k’ sought to raise funds for mental wellness and brain health research. Over 300 runners and walkers had participated in raising awareness for such cause including Marlins right handed pitcher, Pablo Lopez.

Before the participants took their mark, Marlins COO Caroline O’Connor presented a $50,000 donation to UHealth Department of Neurology Dr. Jose Romano.

The 3.1 mile course had participants traverse through and around Marlins stadium, ultimately concluding at home plate. It allowed for fans of the game to have an incredibly surreal experience, finishing at a home plate with such history. All 300 participants were able to score their run!

This fundraising event featured many unique personalities, such as emcee Kimmy B from 93.9 DJ Laz Morning Show, minor league rehabbing players from Jupiter: Eliezer Rodriguez, Miguel Rodriguez, Jesus E. Sanchez, Delvis Alegre, and Danny Gonzalez. Marlins alum Gaby Sanchez also made an appearance with his wife and daughters – his middle daughter, Autumn, had the 4th fastest time among all women!

The most notable highlight of the event was the story of special guest Gus Riley, who joined along with 7 of his family and friends. Riley, who is a lover of the game, is currently a high school student at Coral Gables Senior High. Just a few years ago Riley suffered a brain aneurysm and through his perseverance this event marked his first race since the incident.
